Mens Fairway Woods
Fairway woods are numbered from 2 to 5 and sometimes beyond. They are intended to be used for long drives from the fairway, but may also be used from the tee for shorter drives than a full driver would produce. A 2 wood has a lower loft angle than a 5, delivering a lower flight trajectory and less backspin. Rescue woods have a higher loft angle than a fairway wood, producing high, soft approach shots.
Most golfers prefer fairway and rescue woods over long irons due to the increased distance and accuracy they provide. Many golfers also find that a fairway wood is much easier to use than a driver, as the swing is almost identical to the irons - albiet a longer club.
Fairway woods can generally be used in long grass or hard-pack to drive the ball between 180 and 250 yards. Since woods have longer shafts than irons it is possible to generate higher clubhead speed in the form of torque, making it easier to drive the ball greater distances with more accuracy. A golfer should never use a driver off the fairway - instead, choose a fairway or rescue wood for those longer distances when accuracy is required.
Rescue woods are a special breed of club, designed to be easy to swing and easy to strike the ball with, especially out of trouble spots. They generally have a low, deep center of gravity to get the ball airborne quickly, and deliver high, soft approach shots.
A good example of a rescue wood is the TaylorMade Rescue Mid Wood, which offers loft angles between 19° and 25°.
Time spent practicing with a fairway wood is time well spent. Get comfortable striking the ball with a fairway or rescue wood - it could well become your favorite club.
Good luck in your search for the right mens fairway and rescue woods.
